The CDC defines autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as “a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges.” Persons with ASD often have repetitive behaviors, are resistant to change, and can range from being extremely gifted or heavily challenged. Needless to say, those on the autism spectrum experience life a bit differently than most, especially because our world is not entirely built for their more unique needs.

Over a decade ago, in January 2010, a group of families created Autism Families CONNECTicut as a way to meet those needs by providing support to the children in our community with ASD. Since then, they’ve expanded their efforts to include resources for ASD individuals between the ages of 3-29. This admirable organization’s mission is to “CONNECT individuals on the autism spectrum to each other by providing recreational, social and learning opportunities as we build a meaningful, active and engaged community for their families.” It is their hope that all those with ASD may feel a sense of belonging, increase their confidence, experience personal growth, explore their creativity, and express their playfulness all while creating a unified and bonded community.
